Southville RC Newsletter October 2025

Hi Everyone,

Social and other news

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Tobacco Factory for our New Members' Social. We danced long into the night (the silent disco was a nice coincidence) and it was a perfect introduction to the SRC spirit.

Our next meal night will take place on Tuesday 14 October, and we will be serving chilli after we return from our runs.

To order food, find the poll posted on our WhatsApp group in the Announcements on 18 September. Pre-ordering is likely to be essential as previous nights have been a sell out. Details on how to pre-pay can be found in the same place.

Don't forget to save Saturday 6th December in your diary, which will be our big Christmas extravaganza. Tickets will be on sale soon!

Quarterly General Meeting

Our last Quarterly General Meeting of 2025 will be held after running on Tuesday 28th October. All our runners are invited to stay after running and have their say in how the club is managed.

Any items for the agenda should be submitted to Sam as Club Secretary by Tuesday 21st.

This is the perfect time to think about who you want to nominate for our Volunteer Awards at the Christmas Party. Every year we celebrate our volunteers and recognise those who have gone the extra mile by awarding some of them a certificate, and their EA and SRC dues for the next year paid for by the club.

You can nominate anyone who has volunteered in any capacity for SRC, with the exception of the Directors (Bindal, Dave, Kayleigh, Liam and Sam B) who will make the final decision. We especially encourage everyone to nominate our "unsung heroes" who have done the less visible work behind the scenes. Nominations will close in late November.

Kit orders - including our new hoodies!

Orders for official SRC race kit, T-shirts and vests, are now being taken and close at the end of this week. Place your order by this Sunday 5 October for delivery to the club in late November.

We only do this a couple of times a year, so it’s a good time to think ahead to races later this year and early next!

And as we move into autumn, now is the time to be warm, stylish and on-brand at running events and beyond through the colder months with Southville Running Club hoodies.

To order one for £20, just fill out this form. Payments will then need to be made by bank transfer using the details on the form.

Hoodie orders will be open until the end of Sunday 12th October. Our local supplier will then be able to turn around the orders within a couple of weeks and we’ll let you know when they’re available to pick up.

London Marathon draw

Congratulations to Dean and Nathan who are this year's winners of the club's two places in the 2026 London Marathon. Oliver and James are first and second reserve respectively.

Around 25 people entered the draw, so with roughly a 1 in 12 chance of winning one of the two places, your odds are considerably better entering the SRC draw each year than in the general ballot (around 1 in 50 last time I looked). It's a great incentive to keep being part of SRC, volunteering for the club and getting that extra chance to be part of Britain's biggest marathon.

Race roundup

It was great to see so many people at the SRC Match Your Time 5k on Sunday 21st.

The race could not have been closer, with only one second each between gold, silver and bronze.  Hayley took first with a time only 4 seconds away from her target, Andrew came second with five seconds away, and Laura came third with six seconds.

Earlier in the month, we saw lots of PBs including Jacob at Burnham; Alex, Rachel and Charlie at Chippenham; Dave at Copenhagen, and Simon got a V40 PB at Worcester. Jacob also won his category at the Portishead 10k.

Parkrun

Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday at 9am all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under. You can sign up for free on parkrun's website, where you will get a barcode that can be taken to every event (physically or on your phone); you just turn up, run and then have your barcode scanned at the end to get your result.

On the first Saturday of the month we have an extra-large turnout at our local parkrun of Ashton Court, which will be tomorrow on Saturday October 4th.

For October's SRC parkrun tourism we're heading back over the bridge to Wales for the Riverfront parkrun in Newport on Saturday October 18th. The course is an out and back along the river, taking in the Newport City Footbridge and a number of sculptures. No dogs are permitted on this course due to some narrow sections, and buggy runners should take especial care.

If you need a lift or can offer one, head to our members-only WhatsApp community, where we'll also be exchanging details of any post-parkrun coffee meetups.
