Southville RC Newsletter July 2026
Hi Everyone,
What a month it has been, with weather records as well as running records being broken. For those of you who signed up to become England Athletics members over the last few days, thank you! We now have enough members to secure two places for the club in next year’s London Marathon - more on that in the next few months.
Our next Quarterly General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th August after club - notes from earlier meetings are available on our website.
Race roundup
June… a month of two halves.
It started as wet & wild, ideal (😜) conditions for the Endurance Life Classic Quarter. 44 coastal path miles from The Lizard to Lands End. SRC was back on tour, with several teams & Penny Guess taking on the challenge solo. Congratulations to all that took part, especially legs 1 & 2 as the weather was at its worst! Amazing result for Penny coming in 2nd solo female.
There was a strong SRC turn out to the Clevedon 10k, this year it was cooler but with a headwind on some sections. There were some great results, including PBs for David Thurlbeck, Jacob Dunkley, Luke Prince, Hattie Frankland, Ruby Hollebon, Dean Hopkins, Joe Rumming, Charlotte Robinson, Tom Christmas, Adrian Esch, Dave Unsworth, Peter Ellis, Amy Clay, Anthony Klokkaris and Mark Fermandel. Thank you to Sam Blanning for organising another great social at The Failand Inn.
The SRC parkrun tourism, also a club championship race, was to Riverfront parkrun. This is an out & back course along the river in Newport and can be a fast one. No PBs but there were plenty of Years Best 5k times, and a shout out for Ruby Hollebon who was on for a PB until he stopped as the first person to come across another runner that had had a fall and hit their head to support them until first aid arrived. Thanks to Ruby for showing such instinctively selfless behaviour.
The 2nd 10k in the Tow Path series, was a warm one. But congratulations to Susan Boyle for coming 1st in her age category. Hope there was a Toberlone prize available.
We ventured to the Giants Head Weekend, in Dorset. The running community come together & are hosted by the village of Sydling St Nicholas. Everyone was running on the Saturday, either in the marathon or 10k. It started off very misty, but by the sun soon appeared, making the tough course, with plenty of hills, no easier, but you are rewarded with the stunning Dorset countryside. Everyone still had enough energy to enjoy the Barn Dance later that evening.
Temperatures sky rocketed in Bristol as we came to the end of the month so club runs were much more relaxed & we even had to take a break! Luckily temperatures cooled (slightly) for the last local race of the month, Nailsea Running Club’s beer & banger 10k. As the name suggests, run a 10k & enjoy a beer (other drinks available) & banger at the end. It was not the evening for chasing records, but a lovely way to round off a hot week. It was the last Club Championship race of the series. Well done to everyone who took part.
A big thank you to Laura for the race report.

Pass the Buck
Last call for our SRC organised race, Pass the Buck - a spectacular summer 2-person relay race through the beautiful trails of Ashton Court, where each runner tackles a 5km loop of the estate.
Please do share with your friends, family, co-workers etc and on social media so we can build on the success of the event last year. You can enter here https://www.fullonsport.com/event/pass-the-buck-2026/profile.
Parkrun
Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday at 9am all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under. You can sign up for free on parkrun's website, where you will get a barcode that can be taken to every event (physically or on your phone); you just turn up, run and then have your barcode scanned at the end to get your result.
Our designated parkrun on the first Saturday of every month is Ashton Court, which next month will be Saturday 4th July. We will of course be stopping for a post Parkrun coffee after the event!
On Saturday 25th July we’ll be heading to Three Brooks Parkrun in Bradley Stoke for our Parkrun tourism this month. Easy car parking & a lounge for post parkrun coffees & brunch.
If you need a lift or can offer one, head to our members-only WhatsApp community, where we'll also be exchanging details of any post-parkrun coffee meetups.
