Southville RC Newsletter February 2026
Hi Everyone,
Happy February! It’s been great to see so many runners fill up the Southbank again and again, defying the cold and rain that has featured at what seems like every running night.
Annual General Meeting Minutes
Thanks to everyone who attended January’s Annual General Meeting. The minutes are available to read here. Please contact the Club Secretary as soon as possible if anything needs to be added or amended.
On which note, a warm welcome to our new Club Secretary Amy Webb, who was voted in unanimously by all present along with the returning Directors (Bindal, Dave, Kayleigh and Liam). Amy will take over my secretarial duties in February, but the newsletter will remain in my hands for now.
As mentioned in the interim update, we have also appointed two new Welfare Officers: Clara von Eye and Nic Mimmack will take over from Jasper Roseland and Ally Noble. A big thank you to both our new officers for volunteering and to the previous Welfare Officers for the great job they have done. If you have any concerns about safeguarding, the conduct of another member or any other matter that you feel the club needs to look at, you can speak to either or both of our Welfare Officers as a first point of contact. Both Clara and Nic can be contacted at welfare@southvillerunningclub.co.uk.
Social update
Some great skittling performances were seen at the SRC Skittles Social from SRC runners old and new. Despite valiant fightbacks from the other teams, the Pinheads took an early lead including scores of 9 and 8 in the first round, and held onto their lead in the second round to take the box of chocolates.
In the post-game of killer, Liam cruised through the first two rounds (helped considerably by James twice giving him a full diamond to aim at), but Drew held his nerve in the later stages to keep hold of two of his lives as the rest of the players dropped one by one.
On Friday 20th February we’ll be having a New Members Social. All will be welcome at this event, which is also an opportunity for anyone who has joined our runs recently to come for drinks and get to know their fellow runners. We’ve got a place booked at The Colosseum opposite St Mary Redcliffe for 7pm.
Race roundup
Storm Goretti didn’t stop January’s Weston Prom last month, and conditions were far better than expected. It was back to the 2 lap course.
With 31 of us running the race, plus a couple of supporters, we made up 17% of the field, 2nd only to the home team Weston AC.
Congratulations to Penny who was 1st female and Oli who ran a PB.
The next Weston Prom will be on Thursday 12th February and is bound to see a similar turnout. Head to our WhatsApp group if you are looking for a lift or can offer one.
There’s also the Doynton Hard Half on February 8th (now full), the Dursley Dozen on the 15th and the famous Ironwood Challenge on the 22nd. The Ironwood Challenge in particular always sees a big SRC turnout to take on its 6 miles of hills and trails.
Looking further ahead, the GWR Towpath Series from May to August is now available for early bird entry. The series includes 3 10ks and a 5k, all on summer Friday evenings, and the all-important Mobmatch is on May 29th.
Thanks to Laura and Bryan for their race reports.
Parkrun
Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday at 9am all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under. You can sign up for free on parkrun's website, where you will get a barcode that can be taken to every event (physically or on your phone); you just turn up, run and then have your barcode scanned at the end to get your result.
Our designated parkrun on the first Saturday of every month is Ashton Court, which this month will be Saturday 7th February.
Following January’s double tourism month, in which SRC members headed to Three Brooks and the less glamorous environs of Milan, we're heading to Clevedon Parkrun on Saturday 21st February. Many of us are volunteering as pacers, and we still have slots available to pace people to times between 37 minutes and 55 minutes; if you’re interested, add your name to our spreadsheet. If you’d like to volunteer for other roles on the day, please email Clevedon Parkrun directly. You can check which roles are available via the 5k app.
We will of course be stopping for a post Parkrun coffee after the event!
If you need a lift or can offer one, head to our members-only WhatsApp community, where we'll also be exchanging details of any post-parkrun coffee meetups.
