Southville RC Newsletter June 2025
Hi Everyone,
Race roundup
At the Towpath Mobmatch we were again well-represented with over 70 Southvillers taking part. This year we were edged out by Bristol and West and Westbury Harriers, taking a creditable 3rd place. (We won't dwell on whether the rule change to count fewer runners from each club this year might have influenced the result... even though GWR's emcee mentioned it in the briefing :D)
There were impressive individual results as well, with Daisy Mummery finishing 2nd lady and Katie Egan winning her category.
We also had a strong Southville turnout in Cornwall for the Classic Quarter. Big congrats to Rachael Lammey, Andrew Barnes and Ed Burke for completing the full 44 miles from the Lizard to Land’s End. We also had some great running in quads and pairs - with Southville duos making up three of the top 15 places in the pairs category.
Earlier in the month, the Great Bristol Run saw a strong turnout and a host of PBs, including Robin, Dave, Luke, Clara, Lida, James, Jack, Nathan, Sophie, Sam and Jasper, while Vicky, Lisa, Alex and Liv all achieved their aim of finishing the 10k under the hour mark.
As we pass the halfway point in this year's Club Championships, the competition is hotting up. Andrew Hale, Clara von Eye, George Taylor, Hayley Fox and Sophie Patten have all passed the 200-point mark. However, there are still five races to go, with June seeing the Championships take in Blaise Blazer, Clevedon 10k and Severn Bridge Parkrun, so all is still very much to play for!
See "Dates for your diary" at the bottom of the newsletter for a reminder of the remaining Championship races.
Clevedon Midsummer 10k and post-race social
On Tuesday 10th June many of us will be heading to Clevedon for the Midsummer 10k; a great race on country roads with lots of PB potential. It's also an SRC Championship race and we usually have a huge turnout.
We'll be heading to the Failand Inn afterwards for a post-race social - it's perfectly situated in between Clevedon and Bristol.
As with last year, we'll be taking pre-orders for the meal in the build-up to the race. This year there will be a streamlined menu to ensure we get our food as quickly as practically possible. Once the Failand has confirmed the pricing, I'll start taking pre-orders and payment, so keep an eye on the WhatsApp channel and this newsletter.
If you're not coming to Clevedon, bear in mind that numbers are likely to be much reduced back at the Southbank on Tuesday 10th. If you are an SRC member and can lead a group that night, it would be much appreciated.
And if you are, please try to share lifts, both for the sake of the environment and for the sake of the Failand's car park. We now have a dedicated Clevedon 10k group in our WhatsApp community which is the perfect place to fill spare seats in your car or to look for one.
Pass The Buck
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help put on our inaugural relay race in Ashton Court, Pass The Buck! We have all volunteer roles filled for now, so SRC members and non-members alike are free to find a partner and sign up.
Please note that this race is for 18+ only as a condition of the racing licence.
Summer Party
There are still tickets available for our Summer Party!
Join us for an evening of dancing, nibbles, drinks, and even better company. Whether you've smashed every run this year or just joined the club, everyone’s welcome to celebrate the sunshine, good vibes, and all things SRC.

Parkrun
Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday at 9am all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under. You can sign up for free on parkrun's website, where you will get a barcode that can be taken to every event (physically or on your phone); you just turn up, run and then have your barcode scanned at the end to get your result.
On the first Saturday of the month we have an extra-large turnout at our local parkrun of Ashton Court, which will be Saturday June 7th.
Two weeks later is our parkrun tourism trip on Saturday June 21st. Last month we went to Forest of Dean for a hotly-contested SRC Championship event, which saw 10 of the top 15 places filled by Southville runners. This month will be another Championship race, so it's bound to be another big SRC turnout, and we're heading to Severn Bridge parkrun. It's a tarmac-only course, surprisingly fast despite the initial ascent, which takes you through two countries and three historic counties (if Avon counts as historic) as you run along the bridge and back.
Please do consider volunteering as well; it is very rare for parkruns to have too many volunteers, and it is always appreciated when a club like ours provides additional marshals, timekeepers etc when we descend on another parkrun.
If you're looking for a lift or able to offer one, head to our members-only WhatsApp community where there is a dedicated parkrun channel.
